Karraine Moody: In Aid of the American Dream

Real Estate Agent Magazine sat down with Karraine Moody the CEO of the Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity to discuss her journey with the organization as well as her plans for its future.

Karraine MoodyREAM: What initially drew you to work for Habitat for Humanity?

KM: I was initially introduced to Habitat for Humanity while in college during a build and then while working for the former United Technologies Corporation. Habitat stayed on my radar because of the homeownership focus. Habitat believes strongly in that we are providing a hand up and not a hand out. Through community development and public support; Habitat builds, rehabs and repairs homes.  Although Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization, it operates and adheres to all of the guidelines of a real estate developer and mortgage lender.

REAM: What are the requirements for those that apply?

KM: A Habitat mortgage charges 0% and is only available to first-time homebuyers. Our homeowners represent the working class families that are eager to reach the American dream. Each homeowner completes 150 hours of sweat equity and another 50 hours on financial literacy.

REAM: Who gave the greatest endorsement for Habitat?

KM: President Jimmy Carter partnered with our founder, Millard and Linda Fullard, to spread awareness of the Habitat mission. By far President Carter is our greatest ambassador and he continues to advocate for the Habitat mission.

REAM: What is Habitat for Humanity role in housing affordability?

KM: For several years, Habitat for Humanity has been on the top 10 list of U.S. home builders but what is more important, Habitat is one of the premier organizations creating affordable homeownership opportunities for America’s working class families. REAM: Are there any changes coming in the future that you’re excited to announce?

KM: We are excited to share that Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity will be expanding into Tolland County in 2022 as well as preparing to rebrand our organization to Habitat for Humanity of North Central Connecticut. Our strategic plans outlines a second ReStore in Vernon along with a strong emphasis on our repair programs for the first two years.  To date, our local organization has completed over 30 critical repairs for vulnerable homeowners (elderly, limited mobility and veterans) seeking to age in place. We will continue to serve Hartford County with the hope of creating affordable homeownership in both urban, suburban and rural communities.
